This story provides an overview of the historical control over gay bars in New York and other cities that the Mafia exercised. Indeed, it was the Mafia which started the gay bar and nightlife business. This is an interesting part of gay history and culture that we do not hear a lot about although it was a recent theme on The Sopranos.
