2006 Southwest Gay and Lesbian Film Festival

If you happen to live in New Mexico or are going to be in the area this weekend, then this is of particular interest to you.

The SWGLFF will start tomorrow and run through next Thursday. Even if you are not gay or lesbian, you should check out these films. First, they are playing at the Guild, the Southwest Film Center (which is a really nice theater) and the Film Cafe in Santa Fe. These are all really cool, hip, neat local theaters.

There are about 10 full length movies and maybe 20-30 shorts (shown in thematic groupings). Each movie is usually shown with one or two of the shorts as previews (think the original theatrical release of Toy Story).

On Friday night, Another Gay Movie is showing. This is supposed to be a hilarious farce in the spirit of Not Another Teen Movie. In fact, it's a spoof of a spoof. How could you miss that?

So check out the schedule and find something you like!

"...a gay young man today has a 50 per cent chance of being HIV positive by the time he reaches his late 40s."

From an article on 365gay.com:

...a gay young man today has a 50 per cent chance of being HIV positive by the time he reaches his late 40s.
Can this possibly be true? Is it still really this bad? I have so many (idiot) friends who have unprotected sex, anonymous sex and promiscuity problems that it scares me. I like to watch bareback videos, but the thought of doing it in real life scares the hell out of me. I like to watch horror movies, too, but I would never go out and chainsaw someone's intestines. Porn is fantasy. Real life is not? Why don't gay men get this yet?

Well, like everything else in life, it's more complicated than that.

"These are guys that are the products of a virulently homophobic culture, who've been viciously stigmatized because of HIV for 25 years. They believe being gay means death. Being gay means getting AIDS. Being gay means dying early. This is what's supposed to happen.

"They would even say they want to get it over with. Gift givers would offer to end the waiting."

That scares the hell out of me. Some gay men are just waiting to die because it's somehow part of their fate? I shiver.

Rochester To NY Legislature: Legalize Gay Marriage

"Rochester City Council is sending a strong message to state lawmakers: allow same-sex couples to marry. The entire city council has signed a letter to Speaker Sheldon Silver and State Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno calling for an end to discrimination against same-sex couples." Of all states that should legalize gay marriage, New York is tops.

The Mafia Control of Gay Bars

This story provides an overview of the historical control over gay bars in New York and other cities that the Mafia exercised. Indeed, it was the Mafia which started the gay bar and nightlife business. This is an interesting part of gay history and culture that we do not hear a lot about although it was a recent theme on The Sopranos.

How did San Francisco become so popular with gay people?

Out, Proud & Young in Dublin

Ireland’s gay magazine, GCN, short for Gay Community News, last week celebrated publication of its 200th issue—with a new edition of the magazine entirely edited and written by gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered teenagers.

...

It is something of a milestone marking the explosion of Ireland’s out-of-the-closet gay community to have a group of out teens with enough self-confidence and maturity in their identities to take charge of an entire issue of an established publication.

Homosexuality was still illegal in Ireland when GCN, which today has a circulation of some 11,500 and an estimated readership of triple that figure, first began publishing in 1988. For those of us who grew up with the legendary sexual repression of Ireland’s traditional, extraordinarily austere and strict Catholic culture—the stuff of countless plays and novels—imprinted, as it were, on our inherited cultural DNA, and even transmitted across the Atlantic, the gay teen issue of the magazine is a stunning sign of progress.
